Schritt-für-Schritt Beispielrechnung

Beispiel: Installing luxury vinyl plank (LVP) in a 12 ft × 16 ft master bedroom with boxes covering 20 sq ft each and a 10% waste factor.

01

Calculate Net Floor Area: 16 ft × 12 ft = 192 sq ft.

02

Add 10% Waste Factor: 192 sq ft × 1.10 = 211.2 sq ft total to purchase.

03

Divide by Box Yield: 211.2 sq ft ÷ 20 sq ft per box = 10.56 boxes.

04

Round Up to Full Box: 11 full boxes required.

05

Calculate Total Coverage: 11 boxes × 20 sq ft = 220 sq ft of flooring.

Result: Buy 11 boxes for a total material cost of approximately $739.20.

Flooring Box Formula

Total Boxes = ⌈ (Room Area × [1 + Waste %]) ÷ Box Coverage ⌉

Net floor area is calculated as Length × Width. A waste percentage (typically 10%) is added to account for cutting scrap and pattern alignment. The total required square footage is divided by the square footage covered by one box, and rounded UP to the nearest full box.

Formelvariablen

Room Area — Net floor surface area (Length × Width)
Waste % — Cutting allowance (10% standard, 15%+ for herringbone/diagonal)
Box Coverage — Manufacturer rated square feet or square meters per packaged carton

Berechnungsgrundlagen

  • Flooring is sold only in full unopened boxes.
  • A 10% waste buffer is standard for straight plank installations in rectangular rooms.
  • Rooms with multiple doorways, closets, stairs, or diagonal layouts require 15% to 20% waste buffer.
Trade FAQ

Häufig Gestellte Fragen

Typische Fragen von Heimwerkern und RenovierernBodenbelagsrechner

Why do I need to add 10% extra for flooring?

Planks must be cut at every wall perimeter, around door frames, and around closets. Cut pieces shorter than 8–10 inches cannot be reused, resulting in scrap waste. Additionally, keeping 1 spare box in your attic protects against future water damage or plank replacements.

How do I calculate flooring for an L-shaped room?

Divide the L-shaped room into two separate rectangular sections (A and B). Calculate Length × Width for both sections, add them together to get the total net area, and then apply your 10% waste buffer.

How many square feet are in a box of flooring?

Box sizes vary by manufacturer and plank thickness. Vinyl plank flooring typically covers 18 to 24 sq ft per box, laminate covers 15 to 22 sq ft, and solid hardwood covers 20 to 25 sq ft. Always check the label on your selected product.

Do I need underlayment?

Many modern luxury vinyl planks and laminates come with pre-attached acoustic foam underlayment. If your flooring does not have attached pad, you will need to order matching roll underlayment equal to your net room square footage.
